Extension for Filing Tax Returns vs. Payments
Understanding the Difference
Extension for Filing
An extension to file your tax return allows you to request additional time to complete and submit your tax documents. However, it's important to note that this extension does not apply to tax payments. You are still required to make timely payments, even if you have filed for an extension.
Extension for Certain Payments
In certain cases, taxpayers may qualify for an extension to make specific payments, such as FTB 3519. However, this extension is only granted if the following conditions are met:
- The taxpayer is affected by certain specified storm events.
- The taxpayer is making the payment by mail.
Taxpayers who meet these criteria may qualify for an extension to October 16, 2023, to make their payment.
General Extension for 2023 Tax Returns
The IRS has announced that taxpayers affected by winter natural disasters in 55 California counties qualify for an extension to file and pay their 2023 tax returns. This extension applies to individual and business returns that are normally due on Tax Day, April 15, 2024.
Filing an Extension
To file an extension for filing your individual income tax return, you can use Form 4868, which must be filed on or before the regular due date of your return.
